What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a highly effective time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a Pomodoro.

How to Use This Timer

1. Pick a single task: Decide exactly what you are going to study or work on. Do not multitask.
2. Start the 25-minute timer: Put your phone away, close other tabs, and dedicate yourself to deep work until the timer hits zero.
3. Take a short break (5 minutes): Step away from the screen, stretch, or grab water.
4. Take a long break (15 minutes): After completing four consecutive deep work blocks, reward your brain with a longer break to reset.

Why It Works

Human attention spans are not designed for marathon 6-hour study sessions. When you try to force focus for too long, your cognitive performance drops off a cliff. By forcing yourself to take structured breaks, you maintain a high level of mental agility and dramatically improve your ability to retain complex information.
